AWS Deadline Cloud Adds Persistent Storage for Render Farm Workers

Amazon Web Services

AWS Deadline Cloud now supports persistent Amazon EBS volumes for Service-Managed Fleets, replacing previous ephemeral-only storage. This enhancement allows workers to retain Conda environments, shader caches, and asset collections across worker lifecycle events, which reduces startup times for visual effects and animation workloads. The persistent storage is available in all AWS regions where Deadline Cloud is offered and is priced the same as existing Service-Managed Fleets EBS pricing.

Key Takeaways

  • AWS Deadline Cloud Service-Managed Fleets (SMF) now offer persistent Amazon EBS volumes.
  • This replaces ephemeral-only storage, allowing worker data like Conda environments and shader caches to persist.
  • The change aims to reduce worker startup times and accelerate job completion for animation and VFX tasks.
  • Users can configure persistent volumes per worker and set a time-to-live (TTL) to balance costs and performance.
  • Persistent storage is available in all regions where Deadline Cloud is offered and uses existing SMF EBS pricing.

Why It Matters

AWS Deadline Cloud's move to persistent storage for Service-Managed Fleets directly addresses a critical bottleneck in cloud-based visual effects and animation pipelines. By eliminating the need to reinstall software and assets each time a worker recycles, rendering artists and studios can expect faster iteration cycles and more efficient resource utilization. This advancement better aligns cloud render farms with the performance expectations of on-premise solutions, reducing friction for studios migrating intensive workloads to AWS. The ability to manage volume TTLs also provides cost control. Streaming platforms relying on complex VFX or animated content may see improved production timelines and potentially broader adoption of cloud rendering services as a result; watch for other cloud providers to enhance their render farm offerings with similar persistence features.
