EBU backs open-source MXL for in-memory media exchange

EBU backs open-source MXL for in-memory media exchange
TVBEurope

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), in collaboration with broadcasters like CBC/Radio-Canada and the BBC, is spearheading the development of the Media eXchange Layer (MXL). This open-source SDK aims to revolutionize media exchange within facilities by enabling direct memory sharing between applications, reducing latency and resource consumption compared to current streaming technologies like ST 2110 or NDI. MXL's first code release is anticipated by Q4 of this year, with a joint task force (JT-DMF) formed with AMWA to address orchestration and other layers of the Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) project.

Key Takeaways

  • EBU's Dynamic Media Facility project published its first whitepaper in 2023 and is now focusing on the Media eXchange Layer (MXL).
  • CBC/Radio-Canada and the BBC helped shape MXL as a layered, software-first approach to media exchange inside facilities.
  • Early experiments showed less than 1 millisecond of latency per video transfer, compared with about 20 milliseconds per device for SMPTE ST 2110.
  • The EBU and AMWA formed the Joint Taskforce on Dynamic Media Facilities (JT-DMF) at IBC2025 to address orchestration and the control layer.
  • The first MXL code release is expected in Q4, with production-ready vendor solutions hoped for by NAB Show in April.

Why It Matters

MXL gives broadcasters a concrete alternative to packetizing media for every hop: applications can share frames and audio chunks directly in memory, which the article says cuts compute use, power, and latency. That matters for facilities trying to move from vendor-specific workflows toward the EBU’s layered Dynamic Media Facility model. The ecosystem angle is the open-source route, which invites vendors to build on the same SDK rather than a closed implementation, while ST 2110 remains at the edges and between compute clusters. The next signal to watch is the Q4 code release, followed by whether vendors have purchasable MXL-based products by NAB Show in April.
